2008: A Year In Film

OK, it has been a week since the 2008 Oscars took place and being a film student I should have made some kind of comment on the event, what with it being one of the biggest things in the cinema year. But the ceremony was such an incredible letdown that even the small amount I am typing here feels like a waste of memory and time.

The winners were either so obvious that I could have guessed they were going to win months back(Daniel Day Lewis - Best Actor/Ratatouille - Best Animation) or so wrong that I wish I was in the judging room to know exactly what they were thinking (Atonement not winning Best Cinematography was a travesty!).

So the less we speak about the ceremony, the better we'll all be. Instead, let us look forward to a bunch of films coming out this year, a year which looks to be stunning for any cinema patron.

2008 is looking to be the year of the superhero movie, with The Dark Knight, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Hellboy 2 all vying for geek attention. The Dark Knight will be bloody dark and, by the footage in the trailer, it'll be a fitting end to the career of one Mr. Ledger.

But my loyalty this year is going to Iron Man and Robert Downy Jnr's portrayal of Tony Stark. I've been a fan of his since the much underrated Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and everything I've seen has blown my mind. Sure, it may not have the intelligence of a Spiderman flick or the camera mastery of the new Batmans, but this film is going to ROCK!

We've also got a return of a classic hero, Indiana Jones. I've mostly been underwhelmed at Hollywood's attempts to bring old characters back in new films, but this one looks to break that formula. I feel that Steven Spielberg has earned my trust. And, it is INDIANA JONES!

Also in the nostalgia column, we have Son of Rambow, about a little kid who watches Rambo for the first time and decides to make a sequel himself.

There's Pineapple Express, which is just Knocked Up as an action film. Seriously, watch the trailer. Mr Green Goblin (James Franco) is a funny, funny dude.

Quantum Of Solace, if anything like Casino Royale, is going to blow all Bond pretenders out of the water. Sadly, we have to wait till the end of the year to see it.

But the film of the year, as predicted right now, is going to be Wall-E. I swear, if this film fails to win an Oscar next year, I will eat my hat. That is a promise.

Pixar just can't do wrong. The animation looks astounding and the idea is genius. Just watching the trailer makes me want to invent a time machine so there is less weeks between now and the day it is released.

It's going to be a good year for film.

:D
